The August birthstone is Peridot; its alternative being Sardonyx. The name peridot comes from the Arabic word ‘faridat’ meaning a ‘gem’. Peridot is also known as the extraterrestrial gemstone, as it is found in meteorites.
Peridot has been in vogue since 1500 BC, when the Egypti ans started mining it. They called it the ‘gem of the stone’, and believed it had the power to cure anxiety, improve speech and make relationships and marriages successful. Later on the stone was also used in Roman and Greek jewelry.
The green gemstone is found in the treasures of many European medieval churches, including the famous Cologne Cathedral in Germany. Peridot was most used during the Baroque era, but fell out of the picture over time. It was in 1990s that a new found source in Pakistan reignited the fervor. Peridot is also mined in Burma, Norway, Brazil, Australia, the Congo and Arizona. This gemstone is also sometimes combed from the black sands of Hawaii, where it is fairly abundant and found in larger sizes. The Hawaiians believe that peridot is the tears shed by Pele, the godess of volcano.

The Egyptian priests drank from Peridot cups, believing it will draw them closer to the Isis, the god of nature.
